I have used several methods of backing up linux servers. Commercial solutions such as BESR, and Netbackup, or hybrid Commercial/Open Source Solutions such as Zmanda. Open Source solutions such as PING, Amanda, or Bacula. I have even built some home grown solutions with rsync, and tar.
I have a few linux servers doing various things for my businesses and home, these servers aren’t highly critical, however, the data loss from them could be pretty bad. I was searching for a simple to install easy to use completely web based solution that could be easily accessed by non technical folks in my business to quickly restore files if needed.
I came across this little gem – BOBS – http://bobs.sourceforge.net
I was able to install this in a matter of minutes using the RPM version of the install. I had backups of important files done in less than 30 minutes after the download was complete. The installation wasn’t extremely well documented, like a lot of RPM installs, I was honestly left wondering “what next” after the install.
In my next post, I am going to completely document the steps for installing BOBS on CentOS and setting up your systems for backup. Then being able to restore files from a particular point in time. Compared to Amanda, which is generally my favorite backup suite for a linux environment (or windows for that matter), this software is so simplistic it is refreshing.
This will be a two part series, today we introduced BOBS, next we will explore the functionality of BOBS with both Windows and Linux systems.
My next series will be covering backing up and restoring your servers, data, databases, and virtual systems to a cloud environment with Amanda.
